HOWARD TERMINAL

*Environmental Impact Report (EIR) is a process mandated by the state of California under CEQA (California Environmental Quality Act) where the environmental impact of a proposed project is researched and quantified. Any project that requires discretionary approval by a government agency needs to prepare an EIR.

In 2018, the Port of Oakland and and the Oakland A's begin exclusive negotiations to discuss the use of Howard Terminal as the site of relocation for a new Oakland A's baseball stadium. Upon the completion of the Environmental Impact Report,* real estate agreements, and city approvals, the Oakland A's expect to begin site work in 2020 and hope to host opening day in 2023.

The project includes: a 35,000 capacity baseball stadium, 1.75 million square feet of commercial development, 3,000 residential dwelling units, 400-room hotel, and 3,500 capacity event venue.

Advocates suggest that the project is vital to the "environmental, transportation, and housing future of Oakland," and serves to   stimulate the economy and offer local employment opportunities for living wage jobs.

Concerns surrounding the project include expedited approval and judicial processing related to any litigation associated with the EIR, as well as displacement of local residents due to increased property values surrounding the development.
