COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically impacted the communities around the port. This being said, we understand it may be difficult for residents to access localized information on COVID-19's social impact. Below, The Oakland Port Alliance hopes to resolve this issue by displaying real time COVID-19 data for Alameda County, highlighting relevant articles and academic research, and providing a discussion platform to interact with people of the community on the pandemic.

Impact in the county...

Below are live updates to official numbers and distributions of COVID-19 cases in Alameda county.

Impact in the community...

Researchers have recently found that communities with long term exposure to PM2.5 have increased vulnerability to adverse health effects caused by the virus, including increased susceptibility to mortality.

Impact at the Seaport...

Despite decreases in cargo volumes (11% decrease in March 2020), the seaport plans on operating at full capacity. The Seaport expects severe financial losses in fiscal years 2020 and 2021 and, since the port operates financially independent from the city, has asked for emergency funding. Such financial hardship will impact the timeline and feasibility of other developments, including "Zero Emissions by 2050."

THE OAKLAND PORT ALLIANCE.

The Oakland Port Alliance is a centralized platform that encourages sustainable planning participation at the community level. We want to give the residents of Oakland an accessible platform where they can stay informed on current issues, as well as learn about the measures the Port of Oakland is taking to reduce their emissions and impact on air quality. We intend to increase transparency between the Port of Oakland and the communities of Oakland so that there is better mutual understanding about the processes and what works and what doesn’t.
